| Roughly how fast do the 4 cylinders hit 0 to 50 that are out there racing? |

Most of the cars are not geared for 0-50, they are geared to stay in first gear on the whole track. The reason for this is it would take time to shift, so gear for the size of track your on. In case you wonder, the ponies have a top speed of about ~70 mph at spartan. _________________ Effort equals results...Penske

The ponies have the same top speed in 1st at Spartan that they do at Springport in 2nd? Hmmmm thats interesting.
Last year in a 19.8 second front running car 2 different drivers went 69.8 mph. That was verified by GPS.
To the OP, the optimum gear ratio for a Dodge pony stock at Springport is the best acceleration ratio you can get for an automatic. The ideal ratio for Spartan is basically the worst acceleration ratio. I can't say for sure the actual times. I can say for sure it's not the 0-50 any of us are worried about it's the "back on" to the "full brake" that we care about the most. _________________ Metz Racing #79

Here the math if that helps
6200 rpm /7.0 Gear (7.0 Total gear is from .91 transfer *2.86 final*2.69First gear)
885.71 Axle rpm * Tire size 6.4492ft= Distance traveled in one minute (5712.12ft)
5712.12 ft /60 sec =Feet per second OR 95.20fps
95.20 *.6818 (conversion number for fps to mph) = 64.90mph.
Of course this the last moment before you lift to get into the turn and doesn’t compensate for any slippage in the drive train.

5800 rpm / 5.77 gear (1.22 transfer gear * 3.05 final * 1.55 second gear)
1005.19 Axle rpm * Tire size 6.4492ft = 6482.67ft
6482.67ft/ 60 sec =108.04fps
108.04 * .6818 = 73.66 mph.
That is the math for the mph at Springport. Based on the GPS vs Math you lose 3.86 (it's closer to 4.3 if you don't round) mph due to drivetrain/other losses.
If you subtract the calculated slippage at Springport from the Spartan math speed you get 61.04 mph.
That seems pretty far from 69.8mph to me.
I would love to see a GPS put onto Jimmy or Edson's car at Spartan and Edson or my fathers car at Springport. The speeds would probably be higher for both tracks then the math or previous GPS would show.
Edson has seen as low as 19.2 at Springport (compared to the 19.8 which seen 69.8 mph) Jimmy has gone as low as 16.2 at Spartan.
I hope to have time to take my Neon when finished to Stanton and drag it down the 1/4 mile. Simply to have fun and see what it would do. If I manage to I will come back and post my times to answer the acceleration question. _________________ Metz Racing #79

| No wonder I cant win a race, I didnt major in math. Last year Maurice stuck a GPS on my car. It would only record the fastest speed achieved. Not et, the fastest speed my car reached was about 70 mph. where I reached that speed, I dont know, I assume it was right beefour I let off the gas going into the turn. That was in a middle of the pack sportsman car. |

Martin,
I think you were faster than 70. We put the GPS on Mike Ammerman's car and I think it went about 88 mph. I don't think you were 18 mph slower. Maybe you went 78 or 79.
I'm going to have to strap it on the #93 Dodge Mini Cup the next time I'm there. It's turned laps under 18.50 seconds. I'm curious now what the mph is. My guess is 74 to 75. We don't drop off much in the corners because we run wide open all the way around. We might only lose about 300 rpm in the corners mainly due to dragging the engine down as the car tries to keep from going sideways. But I'll bet our cornering speed is as fast or faster than any of the Sportsman cars. It would be fun with about twice as much horsepower. We only got about 18 hp right now.

Maurice,
Can we strap that thing on my mod some night? It would be neat to see the top MPH we hit.

Dan,
We can do it this Saturday if you'd like. This is one of my few Saturdays off this year, so I'm going to be at the track, just hanging out.

I think you should strap it on this message board to see if we can find out how fast BS travels. _________________ Thanks,
