For you folks who don't visit the MSTRC board, I'm cross posting this..

This is from a crash in 1968 at Talledaga... these cars are going 150mph on tires which are only 4" wide and are basically the exact same cars where were being driven on the road.

Lack of radio communication means the drivers don't know the crash has happen, so car after car slams into the pile.. guys getting out of their cars while more cars pile into the wreck.

Notice after the big crash, the drivers are wearing jeans.. have street shoes on. Short sleeve shirts !!

Pay real close attention to the gas spilling onto the track (no fuel cells in those babies) and the interior shot of the car with the factory dash in place and lap belts the only thing keeping the driver in the car.

Its amazing footage displaying how fearless old time NASCAR drivers were.

EDIT : The embedded code isn't working, here is a link direct to the website with the video.

If memory serves me correctly, Talladega opened in 1969.

Kentucky Speedway $10,000 to win street stocks

http://www.mstrc.com/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=10087&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0

This was taken from the Kentucky Speedway website. The race is scheduled for june 2, 2007.

www.kentuckyspeedway.com

The speedway also will play host to the first "Frank Kimmel Enduro Invitational" Saturday, June 2. Kentucky Speedway's first foray into grassroots racing will be promoted through a joint partnership between the soon-to-be eight-time ARCA RE/MAX Series champion and the speedway. As many as 300 drivers are expected to battle for a $10,000 first-place prize in the first-of-its-kind, 100-lap, 150-mile event created to give local racers the opportunity to compete on one of racing's greatest stages. The field will be set by a blind draw and the race will include a mandatory pit stop on Lap 51. The $25,000 total purse is believed to be the country’s largest for a street stock event.

"Cars in this event will be street stock, sportsman or bomber models that date back to the 70s and will be driven by competitors representing local tracks from around the country. Twenty-five years ago, these were the type of cars that raced on the top tracks. I'm partnering with Kentucky Speedway to organize this race because many of these drivers would never have the opportunity to race on a track such as this otherwise. This is their opportunity to bring their home-built racecar to this track and drive. It will be quite a show," Kimmel said of his first promotional effort
