Just a couple of thoughts as this thread winds down to an end. Spartan has a responsibility to the people in the stands as well as the people racing. They choose to come to Spartan and spend their money when they have many other choices. We need to field cars but we need to do so with out hurting the driver/owner. It takes some balance. Paul and I talk about it every day. If we don't concern ourselves with the spectator they may make those other choices and then you will not need cars. All of this is about increasing car counts and giving people what they expect and deserve to see, well into the future. The key words here are car counts.

When I ran in the Street Stock class at Spartan back in 1982, here's what the rules looked like:

Factory cast iron intake manifold
Cast iron exhaust manifolds
Stock factory 2bbl carburetor
Street tires

I remember we ran low 16's and I think occasionally someone would get into the high 15's.

The tire most everybody ran was the Formula One Super Stock tire. I've been trying to remember the size, but I think it was H70-15. This tire wasn't required, but if you were running anything else, you didn't run up front. I started out running junk used tires and realized that wasn't going to work at all with all the fast cars running the Formula tire. I first started using the Formula tire after locating a deal on them out of Detroit. I was able to get a couple dozen of them and sold them in the pits to the other drivers and saved them some money compared to what the local tire dealers were charging. It seems like they were about $35 back then. The tires lasted a long time.

There were no Super Late Models yet. The top class was the Super Stock class. This class eventually evolved into the Super Late Models as Camaros became more and more popular and replacing factory body panels became more and more unpopular.

Anyway, the Super Stock class also ran a street tire. It was also the Formula One Super Stock tire but in a different size. If I remember right, it was the L60-15 tire. The Formula tire wasn't a requirement, but it seemed to be the best one to run. The L60-15 size was required, though.

The Formula One Super Stock tire was not a radial, it was a bias-ply tire and worked very well.

There were a lot of cars in the two classes and along with the Figure 8's made for a full show of stock car racing. There were no Modifieds yet.

Racing was a lot of fun back then.

Jim and ALL other readers,

1) Illegal heads ~ You ask if we should DQ 1/2 the guys for illegal heads, well they ARE ILLEGAL, but instead you are telling 80% + guys to change their carb and manifold to handle the problem with Illegal Heads ~ by the way NOW that i understand WHY the rules have been changed ~ There goes another $800 + to buy New illegal (legal ~ i'm confused) Heads plus another $1000 to get them Doctored up to be competitive with the other guys heads !

Chuck " Shagggy " Ammerman

Okay, I am not a racer, but I have kept up with this forum. Why in the world would we have the legal people change to the once illegal heads so that you don't have to deal with cheating? That sounds like rewarding the people that are cheating. And what makes you think that the guys that were cheating to begin with, aren't going to find something better and cheat more? I just don't get it. They cheat to do better than the rest, so once everyone is at the same level, won't they still cheat with whatever needed so they can do better than the rest? What happened to punishing the cheaters? I'm confused about this, lol. Doesn't quite make sense. You don't want to have 1/2 of the drivers leave because they are cheating, but if you punish the people that AREN'T cheating and tell them they have to put more money into their car, you might lose them...so which way do you go? Let me just say that Thank God I am not a driver, or someone that is in a position to have to make that decision!!! lol....

here is how crate motors are cheaper. instead of being $15,000, they are less than $5000. if you already have a motor, sell it, and you will probably have enough money to buy a nice new crate motor. our motor had 2 asa races on it when we bought it. the guy gave us the carb, water pump, pullies, distributer, starter, flex plate, and bell housing with it. we paid $3500 for it. this is our third season on it without rebuilding it(dont forget, we bought it used) it is very easy to tell when a guy is cheating too. all you do is look for the guy who gains 2 or more car lengths down the straits. everybody is so even on power that it will creates close racing. if you get a run on somebody out of the turns, it is easier to pass because you will be pretty much past them by the next turn. you probably wouldnt have to worry about people rebuilding their motors every couple of races, because it would cost WAY too much. money is no object for the asa guys that do that. you can use the same car, its not like you have to go out and buy a whole new car. our car is just an old outlaw car, and we usually run pretty good at spatan.
