Hi everyone,
I spent a few minutes looking at different tires, compareing them to the Sumitomo . It looks like the Yokohama Aegis LS4 is real close to the Sumitomo. The specs for Cornering stability, Dry traction and Steering response are about the same. Tread wear is 440 compared to 380 on the Sumitomo. This would mean the Yokohama would have less grip. The max air pressure is 35 psi compared to 51 psi on the Sumitomo, this usually means a weaker side wall (load capacity on the Sumitomo is 1356 lbs, Yokohama is 1312 lbs.)
If I was racing next year the Yokohama Aegis LS4 would probably be the tire I would try first.
Just my opinion

You can't always rely on this figure to indicate how well the tire will grip. For instance, the Barum tire that was being tested as a potential "spec" tire has a rating of 320, yet it doesn't grip as well as the Sumitomo.
The Sumitomo actually has a rather soft sidewall. I think it seems to be stiff because we run more air pressure than normal. Dismount a Sumitomo and feel the sidewall and you'll see how soft it is. That might have something to do with how well it corners.
I think generally the tires that have a maximum tire pressure rating of 44 psi or 51 psi tend to be more performance oriented than those with a 35 psi maximum.
Look at the width of the tread as well as the tread design itself. Look at the width of the grooves in the tread. If the grooves are wide, that means less rubber on the track. We aren't concerned about racing on wet pavement, so wide grooves to help reduce hydroplaning doesn't concern us.

Pony racers that would like to have a meeting about the tire rule please contact me. I would like to organize a little meeting about tires and costs. If we go to our scheduled meeting with our ducks in a row, we might be able to straighten some things out instead of looking like a bunch of blabbering idiots argueing about tires.

I agree with Jarey. Our point can be driven home much better in strong numbers. A meeting to get everyone on the same page is the answer. And it will give the new drivers a chance to learn something. (like me LOL)
I know I need to buy two more tires for next year, but I dont want to get something that will be made illigal at our track. ( I spent alot on my Sumitomos _________________ nastyboi |

Most all the racers that attended Spartan last year where on sumitomo tires. With the car count up and the field close I see no reason to make the racers spend more money trying to find a tire that works as good. Changing the tire rule is the wrong place to start. Other rules should be looked at like engine claim rules. Or even classes for the rookies to get up to speed. But changing the tire rule is expensive and will only act to further separate the class into the fast and really slow.
If you feel strongly that the rule should remain the same or if you do want to search for a new tire. Give Jim Leisure a call and voice your thoughts.
