Two Features in one night for 17-year-old Kyle Feeney at Spartan Speedway over the holiday weekend
Oxford, Michigan (Wednesday, May 25th, 2011): For the 2011 racing season, Spartan Speedway’s Non-Winged Sprints division will be home for 17-year-old Kyle Feeney. The three-time 2010 Rookie of the Year in the open-wheeled Modifieds division at three different facilities is in search of another freshman award in 2011. After a 12th place finish in his first race at Spartan back on April 30th, Feeney was looking forward to race #2 on May 13th.
What he didn’t count on was Mother Nature intervening in his second Feature race at the fast ¼ (0.250) mile semi-banked paved oval in Mason, Michigan which resulted in that feature getting postponed to May 27th and in turn, creating a double features night for the Feeney Motorsports Team. Thanks to the bi-weekly rotating schedule the track has implemented for the Non-Winged Sprints and the Super Late Models, Feeney will have to wait 14 days before resuming his rookie season.
“I was really looking forward to our second night out at Spartan, getting the first race behind us and having a solid finish was a confidence boost and got me comfortable in the car so I felt I could be more focused on improving my on track performance.” The Oxford, Michigan teenager explained. On May 13th, he started fifth in his heat race and would score a fourth place finish. He was definitely looking forward to the feature.
Just eight laps into the main however, Mother Nature interrupted the race forcing Spartan Speedway Officials to postpone the race which will now be completed on Friday, May 27th and then the team will then focus on the regular racing program scheduled for that evening. “The upside to the rain was that my car picked up an engine miss early in the race that I was going to have to deal with and no doubt hinder our performance.” Feeney added.
“With the race being rescheduled we’ve had the opportunity to fix the engine and are ready for double features this week. It’s not often you get a "do over" in racing, but it actually worked out in our favor this week!” He continued. “Definitely going to get some seat time this week running two features in the same night, again I think this is a benefit to me in particular as the longer I ran the first night the more comfortable I got and quicker we were.” He ended.
For the remainder of the 2011 racing season, Feeney’s #99 Sprinter will carry sponsorship from a new primary sponsor; Pro Cote Floor Covering Systems as well as Racing Head Service, Joe Gibbs Driven Racing Oil, M.P.H. Promotions and Feeney Motorsports.
As for his Father, Car Owner, and Crew Chief, Kevin Feeney, his 2011 debut in his #42 Dowker Racing Engines Winged Sprint Car with the Auto Value / Bumper to Bumper Super Sprints Series is on Saturday, June 11th at M-40 Speedway in Jones, Michigan.
