Michigan Auto Racing Fan Club Banquet January 19, 2013
By: Dave DeHem
The 47th edition of the Awards Banquet and Dinner dance for the Michigan Auto Racing Fan Club will take place on Saturday evening, January 19, 2013 at the DeCarlo’s Banquet Center in Warren, Michigan.
Track champions from many of Michigan’s Short tracks as well as champions from many of Michigan’s traveling series will be honored for their efforts in the 2012 racing season. In addition to the champions there are many special awards that will be handed out.
This year’s Top Award winners are Harley Boeve and Port City Racecars will be receiving the clubs top award, The President’s Award for Excellence. Boeve is the driving force behind the famous “Port City Chassis” that has been winning races all over the country and Canada for many years with famed drivers such as Butch Miller, Fred Campbell, John Grega, Johnny Van Doorn and a host of others over the years. The Board of directors felt that the Port City Racecars has long been a leader in race chassis innovation, safety, and quality and as such represent the State of Michigan, its racers, and its fans in an exemplary manner by constructing some of the best race chassis in the world.
The recipient of the MARFC/Eddie Sachs Jr. Memorial Lifetime Achievement Award is veteran open wheel driver Tom Bigelow. Many of you will remember Tom for a variety of reasons that include his starts in the “Greatest Spectacle of Racing” the Indianapolis 500. You will also remember Tom as being the winningest USAC Sprint Car Driver or as the color commentator of the Must See Racing Sprint Car Series. In any event, Tom has had a long, successful and varied career in racing that started way back in Wisconsin in Stock Cars. Tom has also been very active with the National Association of Auto Racing Fan Clubs and has been honored with induction in to that Hall of Fame as well as receiving the Tony Hulman Award, The Lee Holst President’s Award, The Arthur McHugh Memorial Award and was inducted in to the Dayton Auto Race Fan Club’s Hall of Fame in November 2012 along with Mel Kenyon a former winner of the Eddie Sachs Award with MARFC.
The MARFC Writer of the Year Award goes out to the voice of the Spartan Speedway, Mr. “Big Ed’ Inloes. Big Ed has been a fixture in Michigan racing for many years and is a past Recipient of “The Mick Schuler Award” from our friends over at the Michigan Motor Sports Hall of Fame. Ed has been writing for many years in the Marc Times, Michigan Racing Scene, and now the Midwest Racing Scene as well as serving as co-host with Larry Loynes every Wednesday night on their radio show Michigan Race Talk. Each and every week, Ed not only shares the results from the weekend’s races but also shares himself and his opinions on what is going on in the world of Michigan Short Track Racing and believe me when I say it, Ed pulls no punches and is not afraid to tell it like it is whether that is the popular thing to do or not. Ed’s devotion and honesty is what made him the 2012 MARFC Writer of the Year.
Tickets for the Banquet are available for a donation of $39.00 each or $25.00 for children up to the age of 18 and include Appetizers, buffet dinner, open bar, DJ, dancing, door prizes and an awards ceremony. Nearly all of Michigan’s Race promoters and announcers attend this annual event as well as scores of fans, drivers, and crew members.
This event is open to all race fans and tickets can be obtained by contacting MARFC President Dave DeHem at 586-465-7046 or by e-mail at president@marfc.org. There are no tickets sold at the door and all tickets must be paid for in advance with the last day to purchase tickets January 12, 2013. _________________ Rand Thompson
