Techs... would an all-aluminum radiator be considered "stock appearing" and allowed in the Pure Stock FWD class ?
Having some over heating issues with the Grand Prix and among the suggestions is going to an all-aluminum radiator.. |

Patrick, the first thing to do is do diagnose the overheating problem.
1. Is the system holding pressure?
2. Is the radiator clogged?
3. Is the water pump circulating?
4. Can air get to the radiator?
5. Is there combustion gases in the coolant?
6. Is the cooling fan/s working correctly?
If you need a radiator the stock replacement is $125 with 3 speed trans and $135 with 4 speed trans.

It appeared to be holding pressure as when we attempted to open the cap it sprayed all over. The pump seemed to be circulating, as you could see good flow with the cap off. Using the bleeders, we bled all the air out. Both fans are on and there was good pull. Didn't smell exhaust gas and didn't see it bubbling out while running hot. The overflow bottle didn't fill, so I'd lean towards no on the combustion gases in the coolant.
I'd lean towards old radiator needing to be replaced.. and since I knew you might be able to get an all aluminum one, I thought I'd check and make sure there wasn't a problem with it.. I was virtually sure there wasn't, but I just thought I'd ask. |

Patrick,
Depending on the age of the car, the stock replacement might be aluminum anyway. Don't know for sure, but I can call around and find out. |

Brian, I believe he is asking if he can run an all aluminum radiator like a Griffin, you know, a racing radiator as opposed to a stock plastic and aluminum one.
By the way, the stock new radiator is aluminum core with plastic tanks.
Patrick, start the car and let it warm up. Feel the surface of the radiator on the grill side. If the radiator feels like the same temperature(warm to hot) all over side to side and top to bottom, then it is not clogged. If it has cold areas in it then it is clogged.
