Bob Bauer bags Spartan Modified Special
Friday night at Spartan Speedway brought the first hot night for the weather and the racing. The Michigan Modifieds were the first feature out with a special 50-lap feature. Tim Easey and Dan Hamel were the starting front row and Easey took off for the early lead. Bob Bauer took over the point 4 laps later as Bill Luckherst was on the move. Luckherst was hooked up as he claimed the lead on lap 10 and looked to be headed to his first win at the speedway when he clocked going to fast and received the black flag. Bauer reclaimed the lead but was being hawked hard by Harry parish and points leader, Jim Butler. These three swapped positions for the entire last half of the race running side -by- side as Bud Perry and Terry Goldberg were using the quick outside groove to join the battle. A late caution with 2 laps to go for Goldberg getting into Perry created a great finish as the top five cars took their shot at the win, but Bauer was able to hold of the pack to take the exciting victory. Jim Butler snuck out second from Harry Parish as Perry and Dan Logan rounded out the top five. Rookie, Rick Bailey, Luckherst and Goldberg won the heats and Lee Taylor took home the 11-car semi feature. Dan Logan set fast time at 13.659.
The Metro Ford Super Late Models were next out and a decision by rookie, Rob Buckley to start scratch on the field gave the pole position to veteran, Dave Stehower and that was all he needed to bring home his first victory this year. It was not easy as another veteran, Stan Perry tried numerous ways to get around Stehower for the lead but had to settle for second as Tim Ryan, Phil Massuch claimed third and forth from their ninth and tenth starting spots. Chris Place rounded out the top five. Eddie Hill, Chuck Garrison and Jon McNett claimed heat wins and Doug Finley set fast time at 13.083.
The Performance NW Street Stocks put on another fantastic race as Rich Kinch took the early lead as Mike Heavens and Mike McEwan ran hard for second. This trio battled for the point as Brad Moore and Marc Smith had their own battle for 4th. Heavens was able to take the lead with five laps to go and brought Smith with him while Kinch and McEwan got loose. Heavens withstood the challenges to claim his first feature win at the speedway, followed by Smith, Rob Marten, McEwan and Moore. Rookie, John Ward, Rich Kinch and rookie, Rob Patrick won heats and Chris Gay claimed the semi. Pat Dent set fast time at 14.441.
The Post-Net Pony Stocks are seeing new faces in the winners circle every week and Bo Smith took home the win as Cathy Clingan set fast time at 17.039.
This week brings a special evening to the speedway as Lipari Foods and Snethcamp Dodge present Kyle Petty to sign autographs from 7-9 pm at "The Track the Stars Call Home!"
