Jim Heeney, of Stockbridge, clinched the Sawyers Superstore Wingless Sprint championship, Friday, Aug 3rd, at the Spartan Speedway. The point battle was very close between Heeney, Tom Fedewa and Taylor Ferns, with Heeney able to hold on to his lead by winning a heat race and tallying a third place finish behind Ferns and Fedewa. Ferns took the feature win, leading wire-to-wire. Fedewa issued a late race challenge for the lead, but Ferns was able to hold him off, with the top three in points, Ferns, Fedewa and Heeney, finishing one, two, and three. Tom Hernly Jr. scored his first checkered in a sprint car by taking a heat win. Congratulations to Spartan’s new champion, Jim Heeney!
Brian Nuckles, of Columbus, OH, took the feature win for the Michigan Legend Series, as rain threatened and cautions plagued the 25-lap feature. Rick Kilbourn took the early lead with Nuckles tacked to his bumper. Nuckles stuck a fender under Kilbourn on a lap nine restart, Kilbourn got loose and Nuckles capitalized, taking the spot away. Tyler Rycenga also got around Kilbourn Nuckles drove away from the field, but caution on lap 21 gave Rycenga one last shot at the lead. Rycenga was able to keep pace, but couldn’t find a way around Nuckles. At the line, it was Nuckles, Rycenga, Kilbourn, Levi Rouster, and Chance Rice. Rouster, Rice and Rycenga took heat race wins.
Rain shortened the racing program, with the Pure Stocks and the Boss Snow Equipment Pony Stocks running double features on Friday, September 10th. September 10th is Spartan Speedway’s last special show of the season, featuring the School Bus Figure 8’s, Figure 8 Trailer Races, Valvoline Instant Oil Change Modifieds, Pure Stock and Pony Stock No Rules (safety rules do apply), Powderpuff and Flag Pole Races.
