The "Gentleman" Takes Super Late Model Win

By: Spartan correspondent, Michelle Sprague

Lansing’s Chad Finley picked up right where he left off the previous week, by scoring the Andrews Chevrolet Super Late Model Fast Car Dash win, at the Spartan Speedway, on May 16th. Jackson’s Dale Lewis took the heat win and it looked like the 40-lap feature was shaping up to be a good one. Lewis started on the pole, alongside LaGrange, Indiana’s Jeff Brunt. Lewis quickly took the lead, with Wyoming’s James Johnson and Bill Heeney Jr. moving in to take away the lead in the early laps. Holt’s Gary Sherman was working his way to the front, and looked to be a threat, when mechanical problems saw him retire to the pit. Johnson grabbed the top spot near the halfway point, leaving Heeney to battle with Dewitt’s Jon McNett, and fast qualifier, for second. Heeney took the lead from Johnson, bringing McNett along with him. Muskegon’s Dave Stehouwer had been quietly working his way through the field and caught McNett and Heeney. Caution waved, and on the restart, McNett got a good run on Heeney, on the outside, took away the lead and opened up some breathing room between himself and Heeney in second. Stehouwer went to work on Heeney and made the pass for second. McNett slipped up the track on the front stretch, brushed the wall, causing himself to spin, thus ending a great run and relinquishing the lead to Stehouwer. At the checker, it was Stehouwer, Heeney, Finley, Jackson’s Evan Barrett and Dansville’s John Dunivon.

The apple didn’t fall far from the tree, in the Valvoline Instant Oil Change Modified division, as father and son, Ron and Jason Parish, nailed down wins in their heats. The elder Parish, of Okemos, led the early laps of the 35-lap feature as well, with Lansing’s Chris Ozanich tacked to his rear bumper. Ozanich drove under Paris going into turn one to take away the top spot, while Corunna’s Larry Wallace and Vermontville’s Leroy Ellis went after Parish for second. Wallace ducked to the low side under Parish and Ellis tagged along, both cars making their way around Parish. Okemos’ John Mamula and Vermontville’s Nyle Weiler worked their way into the top five, while Ozanich, Wallace and Ellis broke away from the pack. Ozanich was able to hold off Wallace for the win, followed by Ellis, Mamula, and Weiler.

The Performance Automotive NW Sportsmans division saw Jack Koone Jr. make it a clean sweep, as the East Lansing driver took both the heat and feature win. Andrew Clark, of St. Johns, took the early lead in the 25-lap feature, with Lansing’s Jamie Feguer and Williamston’s Jordan Harvey battling for second. Charlotte’s Dane Long followed Koone up through traffic, and the two found themselves battling for the lead for the next 17 laps. Driving a flawlessly, Long never had a window of opportunity to get around Koone for the win. As the battle raged for the lead, Clark, Mason’s Scott Sigman, and Leslie’s Damon Place had their own little war, duking it out for the third position. Sigman took the position from Clark, with Place tacked to his bumper. Place looked to the outside of Sigman for third but ran out of laps. At the stripe, it was Koone, Long, Sigman, Place and Clark.

Jimmy Scavarda, of Holt, was the first repeat feature winner for the 2008 season at the Spartan Speedway. Scarvarda took his second feature win in two weeks, with Edson Rowley III and George Wyers, both of Jackson, finishing second and third. Wyers lead half of the laps early in the 20-lap feature, with Scavarda and Rowley moving quickly through the field. Lansing’s Dan Gokee and Wayne Beckner Jr. duked it out for fourth, with Beckner unable to maneuver around Gokee as laps wound down. Beckner had to settle for the fifth place finish behind Gokee. Rowley and Gokee tallied heat wins for the evening.

The Pure Stock division had some company for their 20-lap feature, as the “Eastside Invaders” paid another visit to “The Track the Stars Call Home”. When the green flag waved, drivers made it three-wide coming down for the start, with Lansing’s Ian Schafer taking the lead. Jordan Lechota and Lonnie Saumier, both of the Flint area, got around Schafer, with Davison’s Chad Lamson and Chris Stearns quickly running him down for third and fourth. It was pretty much Saumier’s race by the halfway mark, followed by Lamson, Stearns, Lechota and Dimondale’s Spencer Drake. Stearns took the pure heat win.
