By: Spartan correspondent, Michelle SpragueThe ShortTrackTruck.com Challenge Series saw four different leaders over the course of 100 laps over the long Memorial race weekend, but Holly’s Rob Roney made the trip to the Corrigan Oil Winner’s Circle at the Spartan Speedway. Paul Schaffer jumped into the lead as the green flag waved, with Justin Claucherty taking command just five laps into the race. Joey Shuryan was running second, while Jon Smalley sat in the third position. Smalley went to work on Shuryan, dove under him going into turn four, and took away the second position. Smalley was reeling in Claucherty, as caution waved, closing up the field behind Claucherty. On the restart, Schaffer made the pass on Shuryan for third, and Smalley dove under Claucherty for the lead, just four laps later. Smalley got a little loose, allowing Claucherty to regain the lead, as Smalley lost the second position to Schaffer. Claucherty and Schaffer duked it out for first, while Roney got around Smalley for third. Schaffer took the lead, with Roney and Shuryan following him under Claucherty. Roney and Schaffer got together a bit, Schaffer lost momentum, and Roney drove into the lead. Claucherty went after Shuryan for second, took away the position but was never able to issue a challenge on Roney for the lead. Smalley and Shuryan were leaning on each other for the third position, with Smalley taking the third spot as laps wound down. Claucherty never really had anything for Roney in the end, as Smalley challenged him for the second position. At the line, it was Roney, Claucherty, Smalley, Shuryan, and Schaffer.
The Performance Automotive NW Sportsman division played host to the Sunday Slugfest, with Jack Koone Jr., of East Lansing, flexing his muscle to score his second feature win of the 2008 season. Millington’s David Kirklin took the early lead in the 30-lap feature. He had some heavy hitters knocking on the door though, as Koone and Charlotte’s Dane Long made a Kirklin sandwich, with Koone taking the low groove and Long running his preferred high line. Mason’s Scott Sigman ducked under Kirklin as well, moving himself into the third position. Kirklin, St. Johns’ Andrew Clark and Leslie’s Damon Place ran in a tight little pack, with Place ducking to the inside of Clark and Kirklin to move into the fourth position. As laps wound down, Koone drove away from the field, taking a commanding win over Long, Sigman, Place, and Kirklin. Koone won the four car dash and Kirklin took the heat win.
It was a "battle royal" for the Pure Stock division, as the East Side Invaders stopped by to make the special Sunday invitational. Twenty-four cars lined up for their 25-lap feature, with pole sitter, Bruce Johnson, of the Flint area, taking the early lead, as the green flag waved, with cars stacked up three-wide going into turn one. Johnson, Davison’s Ricky Plamondon, Troy Shinabarger, and Jordan Lechota were jockeying for position when they all tangled on the back stretch. On the restart, it Plamondon to the lead, with Davison’s Chad Lamson putting his “Chadillac” in first, less than halfway into the feature. Flint-area’s Nick Johnston had a great run with Davison’s Lonnie Saumier, Plamondon, and Chris Stearns in hot pursuit. Caution brought the field up on Johnston’s bumper, and on the restart, Saumier drove under Johnston to run side-by-side. Johnston brushed the wall coming down for the checker, and at the stripe, it was Saumier, Stearns, Johnston, Dan Leeck and Plamondon. Jackson’s Jeremy Lutz, Davison’s Mike Diehl, and Dimondale’s Spencer Drake tallied heat wins for the evening.
The Boss Snow Equipment Pony Stock division saw twenty three cars come out to give the fast ¼-mile a try. Charlotte’s Todd Metz and Jeremy LaFontaine brought the field down to the green, with cars going three- and four-wide down the backstretch after the start. LaFontaine took the lead, but that was short-lived, as Holt’s Jimmy Scavarda roared to the front, bringing Lansing’s Brian Beckner with him. Clio’s Andrew Abbott was running third just ahead of Jackson’s Edson Rowley III. Wayne Beckner Jr. found himself in fifth, by the halfway point. Caution waved, erasing Scavarda’s huge lead and on the restart, Rowley jumped into the second groove to try and make up some ground on B. Beckner and Scavarda. A lapped car almost took out the leader with nine laps to go, but Scavarda was able to shake it off and continue on for the win. As the checkered flag waved, it was Scavarda, B. Beckner, Rowley, W. Beckner, and Jackson’s George Wyers. Portland’ Brad Harbenski, Laingsburg’s Joe Bates, and Scavarda won their heat races.
The Mini-Cup Series returned to the Spartan Speedway, with Maurice Randall setting the bar high as fast qualifier. As the green flag waved over their 25-laps feature, Teresa DeBaecke took the lead, with Dave Taylor taking the top spot away just a few laps later. Taylor, Morgan Baird, and Joey Greening battled for position, while Tim Phillips swiftly made his way to the front. Phillips took the lead nearly half way into the feature and drove away from the field. Jim Debaecke clawed his way into second ahead of Taylor, while Greening had his hands full trying to hold off Randall for fourth. At the stripe, it was T. Phillips, J. DeBaeke, Taylor, Greeney, and Randall. Father and son, Tim and Scott Phillips, each won their heats.
The Capital City Crazies made their way to the Figure 8 track at Spartan Speedway to run the first leg of their series. Owosso’s Jim Gokee pulled double duty, driving both a Pure Stock and a Figure 8 car. Gokee drove to the win over Owosso’s James Clark, Leslie’s Rolley Olney, Flint’s Ray DerMiner, and Davison’s Dan Leeck.
