MASON, Mich. -- The Wolverine Outlaw Winged Midgets just keep getting faster and faster and Sunday, June 25th, was no exception! Gary Harrell set fast time with a blistering 12.154. Fifteen of the Midgets timed in for their 30-lap feature and once underway, the laps clicked off very quickly. Isaiah Bross was quick on the draw, and at the drop of the green, jumped out to grab the top spot. Bross led through lap 21 with Nick Mitchell glued to his rear bumper. Chris Hettinger made his move on Mitchell at lap 14, and went to work on Bross from the low side. Hettinger and Bross ran side by side on lap 22 with Hettinger taking over the lead on lap 22. After 30 laps, it was Hettinger, Bross, Mitchell, Derek Snyder and Harrell as the top five. Snyder and Hettinger both snagged heat wins.
The Performance Automotive NW Street Stocks saw Rolly Olney and Jack Koone Jr. tally heat wins, as thirteen Street Stocks showed up to Slug it out at the Sunday Slugfest Round II. Al Williams and Chuck Ammerman made up the front row, with Ammerman shown as the lap one leader. Corey Davis took over the top spot on lap two, with Koone bearing down on him. Koone took over the first position on lap six and then had to out run Rob Marten and Dane Long. Koone held Marten off until lap 20, with Long getting around Koone as well. Long made his way around Marten, into first, on lap 22. Damon Place went to work on Koone for the third spot as Long drove away from the field. At the stripe, it was Long, Marten, Koone, Place and Sigman.
The Holiday Powersports Pony Stocks were chomping at the bit to get their 30-lap feature under way. Fast qualifier, Jimmy Scavarda, started on the pole but was one lap down. Randy Kretzinger Jr. bolted into the lead at the drop of the green flag, with Joe Bates and Tina Anderson in tow. On lap six, Bryan Passick Sr. and John Ward moved into the top five, bringing along Brent McCort. By lap 11, Scavarda was sitting in fifth and by lap 15, fourth. Scavarda took over the lead on lap 17 and never looked back. At the checker, it was Scavarda, Ward, John Conroy, Passick and George Wyers. Tina Anderson and Scavarda took heat wins.
Eleven 4 Cyl. Pony Stocks tried to hand John Ward his first defeat of the 2006 season on the Figure 8. Patrick McNamara led the first lap, while Trent Jenson took over the lead by lap two, but not before Ward challenged him for the position and took the spot away on lap three. Ward suffered a flat tire on lap eight and his night was over. Jenson led through lap 11, and Brian Beckner drove into the lead on lap 12. Willie Conroy made a great last lap pass on Jenson to finish in second behind Beckner. Kretzinger Jr. and Jacob Newman rounded out the top five.
The Capitol City Crazies made their second run on the Figure 8, with Jim Gokee leading all but the first two laps. Jerry Atwell and Jeff Cummings tried to issue a challenge, but couldn't get close enough to get a good run on him. Ray Derminer ran in the top five for all 25 laps, but at the conclusion, it was Gokee who came home the victor.
The word at the track is that the Super Late Models will be running at Spartan Speedway for the remainder of the 2006 season. They will also make their return to the Springport Motor Speedway, after a two year hiatus, on July 1st. Mark July 21st on your calendar, as the Spartan Speedway will be celebrating its 50th year in operation.
