Bill Bond takes Super Late Models feature at Spartan Speedway. Rain takes Street Stocks and Pony Stocks features!
Under threatening skies the Spartan Speedway managed to get in two of the four regularly scheduled features Friday night on UAW Local 1-C night at the ¼ mile paved oval. Four-time, defending Onaway Speedway track champion, Bill Bond made the long haul from Linwood MI worthwhile as he took home his first career Spartan Speedway feature win.
John Dunivon and Bond brought the stellar Comcast Cablevision Super Late Models field down to the green flag for their big 50-lap feature. Bond beat out Dunivon to the first corner while the rest of the field settled in behind them. Bill Heeney Jr., got around Dunivon and set his sights on Bond as the two standout proceeded to battle. Soon Harry Foote Jr., joined the fray and Foote Jr., hooked up on the outside groove in an attempt to get around Bond. However Bond was up to the challenge as the Linwood MI driver would go on to lead all 50 laps and hold off a hard charging Foote Jr., to win his first ever Spartan Speedway feature win! Foote Jr., settled for second with Heeney Jr., John Ledwidge, Dunivon, Phil Massuch, Lee Taylor, Jack Landis, Chris Place, and Charlie Ryan Jr., were the top 10. Jeff Hack worth set fast time over the 29-car field with a 13.167 while Chip Garlock bested Brian Schlatterbeck, Craig Willet, and Even Barrett in the B Main to transfer to the feature. No heats were run in any of the four divisions as rains forced qualifying to extend until 8:30pm!
The WIBM AM1450 Jackson's Sports Radio Michigan Modifieds managed to get their 35-lap feature in before the thunderstorms hit the area. Outside pole-sitter Bill Luckhurst would show the way during the entire race as the Ovid MI standout made it look easy in winning his second feature of the season. Larry Wallace inherited second with Jim Butler,. Brad Roberts, Dan Logan, Chris Ozanich, Ron Parish, Bill Butler, Dick LaPratt, and Jim Pearce the final top 10. Bud Perry set fast time over the 34-car field with a 13.816 while Leroy Ellis and Dick Maurer bested Tim Easy and Brian Heeney to win their respective B Mains.
As the Performance Northwest Automotive Street Stocks 25-lap feature rolled out the weather became a factor and forced the Spartan Speedway track officials to postpone both the Street Stocks and Midwest Amusements Pony Stocks features! Both will be made up this Friday night as the first events of the evening. Before the rains came., Ben Hidy set fast time for the 16th consecutive time this season over the 31 Street Stocks on hand with a 14.511 while Ed Newman Sr., won the B Main over Larry Blanchard Jr., Joe Barnhardt, Stab Lambert, and Dennis Rockey. In the Pony Stocks, Kenny Clark set a new track record in qualifying with a 16.600, breaking the old record set by Chris VanGordon on 07/11/03, which was a 16.660.
This Friday is Litskey's Professional Brake and Wheel night featuring a full four in one show of Comcast Cablevision Super Late Models, WIBM AM1450 Jackson's Sport's Radio Michigan Modifieds, Performance Northwest Automotive Street Stocks, and Midwest Amusements Pony Stocks.
