Scavarda sails to first win at Spartan Speedway 2004 Season Opener
A crisp cool evening greeted fans on the 2004 Yellow Book opening night at Spartan Speedway. The 2004 opener will be one never to forget for B&L Truck Caps Pony Stock driver Jimmy Scavarda. The second year driver cleaned house by winning his heat race and then backing that up with his first feature win in a stellar drive. The always-entertaining Pony Stock division had a 21-car field all wanting to get to the front as 3 and 4 wide racing was all over the track. Bryan Passick II took the early lead as Russell Potter III worked his way up to 2nd with Scavarda following. A lap 7 restart allowed Scavarda to take over 2nd and a lap later claim the lead from Passick. Fast 4 winner, Trei Deubel was on the move as he claimed 2nd on lap 13. As Scavarda navigated heavy traffic, Duebel was setting up a great last lap battle until slowing in turn 2 on the last lap. Scavarda took his first win as John Ward was 2nd in his first Pony Stock feature, Bruce Jones 3rd, Mark Garland 4th and Kenny Clark 5th. Bruce Jones was the Contingency Connection Hard Charger finishing 3rd from his 13th starting position. Trei Deubel won the fast 4 dash. Jimmy Scavarda and Willie Conroy in a photo finish with Nate Hinder won heats. Kenny Clark was fast qualifier with a time of 16.723 for the 21-car field.
The 50-lap Comcast Cablevision Super Late Model feature had an 11-car invert putting veteran’s Dave Stehouwer and Stan Perry on the front row. Stehouwer took the early lead as fast qualifier; Doug Finley worked the low groove and was up to 6th by lap 9 from his 11 starting position. A caution on lap 12 for a spinning Chip Garlock, tightened up the field. The restart had the two cagey veterans, Stehouwer and Perry playing with each other as Perry snuck by Stehouwer for the lead. Stehouwer then worked to reclaim the lead as Finley was up to 3rd on lap 36. The race was then a 3-car battle as Stehower and Finley fought side by side for second. Perry used their battle to his advantage as he pulled away for the popular win. Finley took 2nd over Stehower. John Ledwidge, John Dunivion rounded out the top 5. Doug Finley was the Hidy’s Towing Hard Charger finishing 2nd from his 11th starting spot. Harry Foote Jr. won the fast 4 dash as heat race wins went to Darel Woolsey, Rookie, Robbie Johnston and Dave Stehouwer. Jack Landis won the 7-car semi-feature event. Doug Finley set fast time for the 27 Super Late Models on hand with a time of 13.091.
The 35 lap WIBM AM1450 Modifieds feature was won by Bud Perry over Bob Bauer, Brian Heeney, Jason Parish and Chris Ozanich. Brian Heeney was the early leader from the pole position until lap 10 as heavy racing throughout the pack had Bob Bauer taking the point. A lap 12 restart had Perry sneaking by Heeney for 2nd and from there; Bauer and Perry took off in a two-car battle until lap 19 when Perry claimed the lead for good.
Perry and Matthew Schindewolf took home the 3D Auto Racing Supplies Hard Charger awards passing 4 cars. Chris Ozanich won the fast 4 dash. Ken Buchner took heat race #1 as Perry Davenport received a speeding ticket. Harry Parish was the winner of heat race #2. Rolly Olney won the Semi-Feature over Schindewolf. Justin Kazmar set fast time for the 23 Michigan Modifieds with a 13.680 lap.
The Performance NW Auto Street Stocks started off the season in wild fashion as a 12-car invert had Joe Barnhart taking the early lead as Marc Smith, Dane Long and Ben Hidy worked the outside. Smith got by Barnhart on lap 10 brining Long with him. Lap 14 had Long side by side with Smith for the lead as Hidy shadowed the two leaders. Heavy lapped traffic on lap 17 allowed Hidy to get by Smith as the outside groove closed out of turn 2. Three laps later, Hidy took the lead and went on for the win over Long, Smith, Landon Hidy and David Thorburn. Ben Hidy also was the Lost Tiger Tattoos Hard Charger winning from his 10th starting spot. Pat Dent won the fast 4 dash as Jordan Harvey took his first checkered flag ever in heat race #1. Mike Ammerman claimed heat race #2.
Ben Hidy started off the season with fast time at 14.467 for the 21-car field.
