WEEKLY RACE SUMMARY by Todd Cumming
Finley Flies to Spartan's Six Pack Shootout Victory
Spartan Speedways roller coaster season continued Friday night as mother nature threw weather with a late fall feel to the racy ¼ mile. It was Vesco Oil Night at the speedway and a fantastic display of show vehicles were on hand for all to enjoy. Penske Racing Shocks Round V of the Finish Line Fabricating/Proformance Racing Engines Six Pack Shootout was the highlight of the evening's events and once again we had another new face in victory lane as Doug Finley made it the fifth different winner out of five events. A.J. Foote and Chris Place lead the field down for the green flag and the duo went side by side for the lead until Place finally took the lead on lap 3. Place looked like he was the early favorite as he started to stretch his lead through lap 10 as Finley battled A.J. Foote for second. Mike Kugler spun in turn 2 running 4th and stacked up the field as Jack Landis and Jon McNett went to the pits with front end damage. The restart allowed Finley to get by Foote and set his sites on Place. Finley and Place then put on a show as Finley looked high and low trying to get by Place. Finley finally got up next to Place on lap 17 as they went side by side for the next five laps, when Finley took over the point and was never headed for his second win of the season. Place was second, followed by A.J. Foote, Tim Ryan and Jimmy Gallagher. Stan Perry was the Hidy's Towing Hard Charger finishing 10th from his 16th starting spot and also was the RaceFan.Com/Valvoline Oil winner. Lee Taylor took home the Contingency Connection Honors and Finley was the Valvoline Oil Hard Charger. Gary Duram, Stan Perry and Chris Place were heat race winners and Rob Buckley took the Comcast Cablevision Semi Feature over Dave Stehouwer and Evan Barrett. Jack Landis set fast time for the 25-car field with a lap time of 13.225.
The WIBM AM1450 Michigan Modifieds was all Bill Luckhurst's from the pole position. Luckhurst made a rare appearance this season worthwhile as he led every lap over Bud Perry, Harry Parrish, Jim Butler and Justin Kazmar. Nyle Weiler won the 3D Auto Racing Supplies Hard Charger Award finishing 9th from his 21st starting position. Dick LaPratt was the RaceFan. Com/ Valvoline Oil winner.
Mother Nature then rained out the rest of the evening's program as a light rain continued to fall. September 5th will be the date of the annual Harvest 250 this year and the Super Late Model Harvest 100 should be very interesting as five different drivers; Harry Foote Jr., Jack Landis, Tim Ryan, Tom Fedewa and Doug Finley will have their last chance at taking home a brand new 2005 Finish Line Fabricating chassis as it will be the last round of the Six Pack Shootout Series. Harry Foote Jr. currently leads the series over Chris Place, Tim Ryan and four drivers tied for 4th through 7th. With only a month of racing remaining, make plans to visit "The Track the Stars Call Home-Spartan Speedway".
